Péribonka, Where Stories Begin
Located in the heart of Saint-Édouard Church in Péribonka, within a grand and majestic setting, our new permanent exhibition is first and foremost a celebration of the richness and diversity of Franco-Canadian literature. While honouring stories deeply rooted in Péribonka, such as Maria Chapdelaine , the exhibition helps shed light on the sources of imagination inspiring more than thirty authors.
As you make your way through the exhibition, enriched by interactive activities, you will discover how, from a single spark, an amazing creative process is born—one with the power to unleash millions of words and transform them into unforgettable characters, places, and moments.
Péribonka, Where Stories Begin is an invitation to experience the wonder of literature.

The Samuel-Bédard House
In 1912, French writer Louis Hémon arrived on foot in Péribonka after walking approximately 110 kilometers from Roberval to Péribonka. He stayed with Samuel Bédard, a local resident, for over two months. It was here that he observed the local population and took notes for his novel Maria Chapdelaine . 📚
Take a leap back to the early 20th century, into the heart of the colonization of Lac-Saint-Jean / Pekuakami, by visiting the Samuel-Bédard House. Immerse yourself in the daily life of the region’s inhabitants during that era while exploring the house that hosted the French author.
Please note that the house is closed during the winter season. However, you can still visit it through virtual reality.
