Description
On September 18, 1919, on the banks of the river in Péribonka, a commemorative obelisk-shaped monument was erected under the initiative of Damase Potvin, a journalist from Saguenay, a great admirer of Louis Hémon, and co-founder of the Société des Arts, Sciences et Lettres de Québec. However, since the novel’s qualities were not unanimously appreciated in the village, the monument suffered repeated acts of vandalism, eventually being dismantled and thrown into the river. It was later recovered and installed in front of the former house of Samuel Bédard, where the author stayed during his time in Péribonka.
During the museum redevelopment project in the center of the village, the monument was relocated once again on November 8, 2023. It now stands in the inner courtyard of Espace Péribonka, in front of the Maison Samuel-Bédard.
